Active Living - Curriculum Expectations A1: Participate actively and regularly in a wide variety of physical activities, and demonstrate and understanding of factors that can influence and support their participation in physical activity now and throughout their lives.
1.Actively participate in all aspects of the program: being prepared and equipped to participate in the activity, being engaged in the activity, striving to do their personal best, adapting to challenges when exploring new activities, monitoring their progress, increase their willingness to try new activities, in a variety of settings.
2.Demonstrate an understanding offactors that contribute to your personal enjoyment of being active and that can support your participation in physical activities throughout your lives, explain what actions you can take to overcome challenges and barriers to regular physical activity.
3.Demonstrate positive social behaviours and adherence to ethical and fair play standards that contribute to creating a rewarding and enjoyable activity environment and display leadership while participating in physical activities (eg encourage others; give constructive feedback etc).
A2: Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of being physically active, and apply physical fitness concepts and practices that contribute to healthy, active living.
1. Participate regularly in sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity to the best of their ability.
2. Describe the short and long term benefits of developing both health related fitness (i.e. cardiorespiratory, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, body composition) and skill related fitness (i.e. balance, agility, power reaction time speed, co-ordination)and explain how to use basic training principles to enhance types of body fitness (progressive overload, specificity, etc).
3. Asses their level of health-related fitness during various physical activities and monitor changes in their health related fitness over time.
4. Develop, implement and revise a personal fitness plan. Use data from their fitness assessment and an analysis of their own strengths and limitations to determine a starting point and set goals. Apply training principals to help achieve your goals and develop strategies to overcome challenges, celebrate successes, assess results and revise goals to training routines as needed.
A3: Demonstrate responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others as they participate in physical activities.
1.Demonstrate behaviours and apply procedures that maximize their safety and that of others (i.e. wear appropriate clothing and required safety equipment where necessary, make sure they are ready before beginning activities, assess the safety of equipment and report concerns to instructor).
2.Demonstrate an understanding of how to deal with emergency situations related to physical activities (i.e. know when to call for assistance or phone 911, understanding the importance of staying calm, recognize the signs/symptoms of a concussion, recognize the signs of shock). 3.Demonstrate an understanding of CPR techniques and when and how to use them. (i.e. know and rehearse the response sequence, explain what an AED is used for, identify where they are located in local community facilities).
