HISTORY
· Soccer has its roots in nineteenth-century England.
· British military troops adopted the sport as a favorite leisure pastime and through colonization efforts of the British Empire in the 18th and
19th centuries; it was introduced to many parts of the world.
· Today, soccer is the most popular team game in the world, with an estimated 22 million participants.
· It is called “football” in other countries and “soccer” in the United States and Canada.
GAME RULES
· A soccer team consists of 11 players. (10 + goalie)
· The basic positions
· Goalie,
· Defender (right, left, sweeper or stopper. Also called "fullbacks")
· Midfielder (right, center and left)
· Forward (right, center, left and striker)
· There are two halves to a soccer match with each one lasting 45 minutes.
· A goalie (goal keeper) is the only player allowed to touch the ball with their hands.
PLACE-KICK
· The place kick is kicked from the center point on the centerline.
· The ball must roll one complete revolution before any player on either team can touch it.
· The kicker is not permitted to play the ball a second time until it is touched by another player.
· Kickoffs are taken at the start of the game, to start the second half, and after a goal is scored.
THROW-IN
· The throw-in is taken when the ball crosses over the sideline by the team who didn't touch it last.
· Players must use both hands, initiate throw from behind the head while keeping both feet in contact with the ground.
· The thrower is not permitted to touch the ball a second time until another player has touched it.
· If a ball is thrown improperly, a throw-in is awarded to the opposite team.
· A player cannot score directly off a throw-in.
GOAL KICK
· When a player attacking that end kicks the ball over the end line, a goal kick is awarded.
· This means the goalie (or a defender) of that end may kick the ball from the box in front of the goal.
· The kick may be taken anywhere in the goal box.
· Opponents must be outside of the penalty area until the ball leaves the area.
CORNER KICK
· This is awarded when the player kicks the ball over the end line (goal line) he or she is defending.
· A player from the attacking team kicks the ball from the corner closest to where the ball went out.
· Defending team must be no closer than 10 yards to the ball before it is kicked.
· The kicker is not permitted to play the ball a second time until it is touched by another player.
OFF-SIDE
· Players are not allowed to be off side. This results in a free kick from the off-side spot.
· Off-side is when you receive a pass and there are not at least 2 opponents nearer to the goal line IN THE OFFENSIVE ZONE
· You can't be off-side when receiving the ball from a corner, throw in or when on your half of field
GOAL
· A goal is scored when the ball has passed completely over the goal line between the goal posts.
FREE KICK
· Any time any foul or handball is committed, the other team receives a free kick.
· When taking free kicks, the other team must be at least 10 yards away.
· Direct Free Kicks (taken where foul occurred.)
*Goal can be scored directly against offending team.
*Examples: kicking, tripping, charging, striking, holding, pushing an opponent, or carrying, striking, or propelling the ball with a hand or arm.
· Indirect Free Kicks (taken where foul occurred.)
* Goal cannot be scored until ball is played or touched by a second player from either team.
* Examples: high kicking, or any fouls occurring on an opponent not within playing distance of the ball.
REPRIMANDS– The referee will give one warning or yellow card for violations of the rules. A second violation results in a red card, which results in
ejection from the game. An ejected player cannot return to the game and cannot be replaced by another player.
PENALTY KICKS
· This is the direct result of a foul within his team’s penalty area.
· The goalie of the team that committed the foul will have to try to stop the kick from the person the other team chooses to take the free kick.
· These can also be the result of a handball in the penalty area.
· All players are outside the penalty area except the goalie and the kicker.
